 Municipal Credit Union (MCU) serves the people who serve “the city that never sleeps.” With a membership of nearly 618,000 New Yorkers working around the clock, it’s imperative the $4.5 billion credit union provides access to the financial tools members need, exactly when they need them. 

To deliver on this promise, MCU provides frictionless, always-on, end-to-end digital experiences. The credit union believes members must be empowered to effortlessly engage with each of their accounts—from savings and checking to mortgages and personal loans. They must also feel seen and recognized, known as individuals by the credit union they trust. 

As an embedded e-commerce platform, Movemint connects consumers to preapproved offers and applications in just a few clicks. It checks all of MCU’s product delivery boxes by providing personalized digital experiences that help the credit union turn its commitment to membercentricity into measurable results. 

Less than a year after embedding Movemint into its product strategy, MCU had booked nearly $195 million in new loans and earned more than $27 million in new deposits. On top of that, the credit union realized $154,000 in noninterest income from loan protection products sold through the platform.

The Challenge

Personalization at scale

Over decades of pursuing member-centered growth, MCU has learned personalized communication is an unmatched advantage to any campaign. By delivering the right message at the right time—and through members’ preferred channels—MCU solidifies connections that fuel long-term loyalty. 

According to MCU Chief Lending Officer Michael Savino, the credit union was looking for a way to scale that personalization, specifically through preapproved offers. “We needed a data-driven solution that aligned with our strategic pursuit of personalized member experiences,” said Savino. “We explored our options and ultimately chose Movemint for its flexibility and integration capabilities. Movemint’s proven success with other credit unions was also important to us.” 

Indeed, nearly 150 credit unions have been able to serve more than 20 million members— representing more than $500 billion in assets—through Movemint.

 The Solution 

 Frictionless for members from offer to funding 

 Because of MCU’s laser focus on end-to-end experiences, the credit union has extended the intuitiveness of Movemint’s preapproved offers and streamlined applications all the way through to fulfillment. 

For personal loans and credit cards, for example, MCU uses APIs to fully automate the funding process. Through its integration with MCU’s loan origination system (LOS), Movemint triggers the automation of document generation, collection, and attachment upon receipt of a redeemed offer —enabling the LOS to handle those tasks seamlessly.

How Movemint Works

Credit unions set up personalized offers based on member attributes rules. Members are served tailored offers through a personalized offers page on their home banking app. If interested, they are seamlessly guided through redemption, often completing their transaction in just minutes.

The Implementation 

Ahead of schedule and directly connected 

MCU kicked off Movemint with two campaigns: the first featuring consumer lending, and the second featuring deposits and home equity loans. The second campaign was made possible by Wildcard, a unique Movemint feature which allows credit unions to promote any product imaginable through the platform.

“Movemint’s flexibility allowed us to deliver a diverse product set right from the beginning,” said Savino.

For its initial campaigns, MCU identified more than 50,000 preapproved members. Since then, campaigns have expanded to more than 160,000 preapproved members per quarter, continually optimizing based on performance data.

Beyond his personal experience, Savino has seen Movemint’s impact with members across segments. Members facing challenging circumstances stand out. He recalls a member who had recently experienced a house fire. She approached MCU’s Business Development Officer worried about her chances of being approved for a personal loan. With instant access to Movemint, MCU staff was able to reassure her with an immediate preapproval. Funds were in the member’s account within two hours of their conversation.
